Straus Park is built on a tradition of community. From the Cherokee Indians, who called the area "The Blue Hills of God," to Brevard's earliest settlers, people have come here to share time with nature and loved ones. In fact, one of the nation's oldest summer camps, Camp Sapphire, was located here in the 1920s. In 1945, local businessman Harry Straus purchased the property as a gift for his employees and community, turning it into a place for recreation and outdoor education. For decades, people came here to hike, swim, picnic, play tennis and enjoy being together. William McKee, developer of the Wade Hampton Club in Cashiers, NC, purchased the 315-acre site in 1997 with an ambitious goal in mind. He planned to create a place that incorporated these traditions of family, community and nature's beauty into a unique neighborhood. He called it Straus Park. The tradition continues at today's Straus Park - a neighborhood built on a heritage of appreciation for natural beauty and the importance of community.
